Notes
It might have been Noel Coward In Switzerland. Noel Coward in London. Noel Coward in the West Indies. Noel Coward almost anywhere. It just happens to.be Las Vegas. But then Mad Dogs and Englishmen go anywhere. More important though than where he has been caught in the act is the fact that his performance has been taped. There is only one Noel Coward and were he to record under water, in flight, or even in Swahili those celebrated clipped, flat words would, still be as distinctive.

Queen Victoria knew fifty glorious years. Mr Coward has so far had forty. For not least of his considerable talents is that quality which singles out 'the thoroughbred - staying power. He was welcomed into show business as an Enfant Terrible and has stayed to become The Master. He has entertained right through the Cocktail Age into the Atomic Age. Remained a blithe spirit from the Charleston to the Shake.

Where English is spoken, wit appreciated, and perfection revered then Mr. Coward is in demand. Cabaret was merely one more challenge in a career which has included acting, writing, directing, composing and painting. He tackles each with seemingly inexhaustible gifts and effortless ease. Except that the bland, sophisticated and elegant front is a cover for preparation, professionalism and polish. The greatest sin in his book, song, act or play is to bore the public.

In cabaret he stands regally at the microphone. Carnation buttonhole. Pocket handkerchief. Regulation inch of white shirt cuff showing. Straight out of the world's best-dressed men list. He looks like an Asiatic emperor. A Chinese mandarin. Or even a Sioux chief. Concentrate on his lyrics instead and you appreciate why he has earned his reputation as one of the world's wittiest men. Which is why so much of his performance bears listening to again and again. If there is an apt word or right phrase to be turned then Noel Coward will turn it. He is, in short, the supreme professional. How else could he have influenced virtually every part of the world of entertainment? Fortunate indeed that Mrs. Coward put her son on the stage and received different advice to dear Mrs.Worthington.

In the early part of this record he claims merely to "have,a talent to amuse',' and finishes with the suggestion that "The Party's Over". It isn't over. It has been going on for almost half-a-century and will catch fire again wherever and whenever the record is played. James Green (Television critic "Evening News")

The original recording with the famous picture of Coward drinking tea in the Nevada Desert was withdrawn for many years due - allegedly - to a threatened libel action. It was eventually re-released with a rather crass cover showing Coward leaning against a cartoon cactus.
